2026 Mustang RTR Spec 5 Has More HP Than a GTD and Costs Less Too
Two-time Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. is both a fan of Ford Mustangs and a heavy smoker, and he wants you to pick up the habit too. No, not nicotine, rather lighting up the rear tires with a supercharged V-8, whipping a J-turn, and basically just causing havoc at the track. Now, straight from his team of mad scientists at RTR Vehicles, there’s a wild new ‘Stang ready to tear up the tarmac.
A Wilder Ford Mustang
RTR calls it the 2026 Spec 5, and it is one cyberpunk pony car. The Spec 5 has long been the halo vehicle for RTR, a showcase of all the go-faster tricks the company has learned over the years.
This time around, things are even wilder than usual. The build starts with a standard Mustang GT chassis with the option boxes ticked for the Performance package and the Recaro seats. Then RTR feeds it a metaphorical gamma ray dose like the one that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, adding a composite widebody with huge swathes of exposed carbon fiber.
It looks bonkers enough to roll up alongside a Mustang GTD and even get a nod of respect from the current king of the track-spec Ford. Under the skin, the Spec 5 is running a full suite of adjustable suspension components. It comes preset for a street/track blend, but there’s a huge amount of flexibility for owners to adjust for their preferences.
The engine is a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. The setup makes 870-plus horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque. Again, the kind of power levels to make even a GTD owner raise an eyebrow; the GTD makes do with just 815 hp. Even better, the Spec 5 offers a choice of transmissions. You can get a 10-speed automatic, or there’s an honest-to-goodness six-speed manual.
The 20-inch wheels wear appropriately massive rubber, with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S set sized 305 mm up front and 315 in the rear. The brakes are two-piece rotors with Brembo calipers, six-pot up front and four-pot out back.
Built for Having Fun
Then there’s the Gittin Jr. tweaks that make the Spec 5 something special. Ford’s factory monster Mustang is all about nailing that Nürburgring lap time, clipping apexes, and taking things seriously. The Spec 5 is built for speed too, but Gittin Jr.’s bio describes him as a “Professional Fun-Haver.”
To that end, the Spec 5 comes with an electronic drift brake, the better for initiating spectacular, smoky drifts. It’s like a road-legal Formula Drift car you can take to your local track, then decide whether to go through the corners the fast way or the fun way.
Only 50 RTR Spec 5s will be built per year, each one offering a high level of customization in terms of paint choices and wheel finishes. The base price for the vehicle is $159,999, a lot of money for a Mustang, but around the same price point as some Corvettes.
