Jeep Pulls the Plug on the Planned Plug-In Hybrid Gladiator 4xe

The Jeep Gladiator is basically just a Wrangler with a stretched wheelbase and a cargo bed mounted over the solid rear axle. Naturally, Jeep’s mid-size pickup truck is perfectly suited to house the same powertrains as its SUV sibling. The latter’s 4xe plug-in hybrid system was set to get bolted into the Gladiator this year—until it wasn’t.
Stellantis has decided that it will no longer build a Jeep Gladiator 4xe, which has been in the works for the past several years. Following a report by Automotive News, a Stellantis spokesperson shared the following statement with Car and Driver: “As customers’ propulsion preferences for battery-electric trucks continue to evolve, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified Gladiator variant in the Jeep lineup. The Jeep brand has already begun reinvesting funding to ensure the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator and will introduce even more customer-requested factory features, customization, and additional powertrain options in the near future.”
Stellantis is currently in the midst of aggressively adjusting its product plans, especially as they relate to models with electrified powertrains. For example, the auto conglomerate has also canceled the Ram 1500 EV, suspended production of the Dodge Hornet, and dropped the R/T trim from the Dodge Charger EV lineup. Still, for the time being, Jeep customers can still get their hands on a plug-in hybrid model with the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe.
As for the Gladiator, the gas-powered truck apparently isn’t in danger of hitting the chopping block. In fact, Jeep plans to improve its roster of features and custom add-ons. The Wrangler-based pickup will also introduce a Rubicon 392 model, which will feature a Hemi 6.4-liter V-8. The same setup is currently offered in the 470-hp Wrangler Rubicon 392. The one we tested raced to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and finished the quarter-mile in 12.8 ticks at 104 mph.
