Top 10 Supercars of all time

 10. Lamborghini Miura

Image

It was 1966, the Vietnam War was in full force, Frank Sinatra’s “strangers in the night” was one of the biggest songs in the world. Personal Computers and Cell phones were as much of a pipe dream as flying cars. This is the backdrop for the introduction of the Lamborghini Miura. This is mind bending because an unknowing person looking at the Miura today would have no idea they were looking at a car more than 50 years old.

The Miura is everything a supercar should be; futuristic looking, expensive, rare, and fast. The Miura was so futuristic looking at the time in fact that it was the inspiration for the term supercar. A car crafted in secret by 3 Lamborghini Engineers, the Miura almost didn’t get made. Eventually Ferruccio came around, and the project was given the green light.

A quick look over the Miura and it is clear that all modern supercars are offspring of the Miura. Using a high revving V12 attached to a five speed manual transmission the Miura launched from 0-60 in about six and a half seconds.

Although the price and performance figures of the Miura make it look archaic given the supercars of today, for its time it was a radical beast whose influence can be seen in every supercar that has come after it.

9. Mercedes McLaren SLR

Think of the Mercedes Benz SLR as the car equivalent of one of its celebrity owners, the unstoppable Floyd Mayweather Jr. There is a lot of flash and bravado, but underneath it all, there is a serious beast. The SLR is a car of constant conflict. On one hand you have a body that to the untrained eye looks similar to that of the normal SL, yet underneath the shell you have components created by the formula one heavyweight McLaren. This explains why an automobile airhead like Paris Hilton owns one, but so does auto legend Jay Leno.  The 5.4 liter supercharged v-8 produces 617hp, allowing the SLR to reach the rare air of 200m.p.h. The SLR may be the most underappreciated supercar on the list, but is fully deserving of the #9 spot on our list.

8. Porsche Carrera GT

Anytime you have an auto manufacturer with the racing lineage of Porsche take their technology from the track to the street it is usually results in something special, and this is definitely the case with the Porsche Carrera GT. Produced from 2004 to 2006 by the German giant, the Carrera GT is one of the best sounding cars ever made, combining the gravely low rpms eloquently with the high shriek of a Porsche V10, make this supercar music to any enthusiasts ears. With only 604 being sold to the united states, the Carrera GT is in the company of other flagships such and the Ferrrari Enzo, and Mclaren F1, as one of the rarest supercars ever produced.

7. Koenigsegg AgeraImage

Although the name is not as sexy as Murcielago, or Enzo, this car is as serious supercar. Even if you’re so blind you don’t love this car, you have to appreciate the story behind it. CEO Christian Von Koenigsegg was a car enthusiast who from a young age who dreamed of one day owning his own supercar company, which most of us can probably relate to. Unlike most of us however, he saw his dreams come true. They came to life originally as the company’s first car, the CC8, which led to the creation of the Agera, which is nothing short of a beast. The company is very forward thinking in their use of futuristic fuel systems, and automotive technology. The most recent effort from the Sweedish supercar builder is the Agera. The Agera is no joke, with the “standard” version developing 905 hp, and the Agera R producing a whopping 1,100 horsepower. This allows the car to rocket to 60mph in 2.9 seconds. To make it even better, the monster engine is wrapped in a stunning hand built exterior, with LED lighting, and the most insane doors you have ever seen. There are really only two things preventing this car from being higher on our list. First, the company is so small, and builds so few cars, I have never actually seen one in person, much less driven one, and I know I am not the only one. Also, despite claims of the Ageras capabilities for rocketing to 275mph, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of proof to back this up. Don’t get me wrong, I have no doubt this car is fast, but until there are more solid figures out there, the Agera remains nestled at #7 on our list.

6. Pagani Zonda

Image

If I were to tell you that the car coming in at number six on our list was named after an air current above Argentina you probably wouldn’t expect much, and that’s fair enough. But if I were to tell you that this car was developed by F1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio, you may start to get excited. Add to this an engine developed by Mercedes Benz powered V12 engine, and you might start to get sweaty palms. None of this however can prepare you for the savagery possessed by the Zonda. With a carbon fiber body, and a V12 engine between 6.0 and 7.3 Liters depending upon which model you choose, this car is pure petrolhead pleasure.

The most insane version is the Zonda R, a race spec version with full rollcage, which you might need should you get too brave with the 740hp engine that revs to 8500 rpms, just thinking about it gets me excited. And last but not least, the sound made by the Zonda, especially the Zonda R, and Cinque, is something that will send goosebumps down any self respecting supercar lovers leg.

 5. Ferrari F40

Take a quick glance at our list and it’s obvious that technology cannot be overlooked as a factor in our rankings. The bulk of the cars on our list have been produced in the last 10 years, as technology has advanced more and more rapidly by the hour. This makes it even more impressive that a car that began production in the late 80’s cracked the top rarified air of the top 5. During the supercar prime of the Porsche 959 and Lamborghini Countach, the F40 faced a tough task in replacing Ferrrari’s classic 288 GTO. A rare excursion into the turbo world for Ferrari, the F40 is one of the most iconic supercars ever produced. I think most guys my age had the F40 poster in their room as a kid, and the car looks no less futuristic and gorgeous now than it did then. The F40 is not only gorgeous, but a serious racing machine. The lightweight car, powered by a twin turbocharged v8, was capable of 0-60 times as low as 3.8 seconds, a time that is still in the upper crust of supercar royalty.

4. Lamborghini Murcielago

The lovechild of the always wild and exotic Lamborghini S.p.A. and it’s more conservative and professional partner Audi, this car is all time super car royalty. Lamborghini had since its inception as a company been the wild and rebellious Italian supercar maker. The exotic and futuristic looking Countach, Diablo, and Miura were some of the most radical cars ever made, although there did seem to be an element of something missing. This was solved when Audi came in and the two produced their first full scale supercar. This car is nothing short of fantastic, and I don’t just say that because this was the first supercar I ever drove. The 6.2 and 6.5 Liter engines produce one of the most beautiful V12 exhaust notes on the planet. It only takes a few seconds behind the wheel of the Murc to feel the passion and precision with which this car was made. The sound of the V12 screaming inches behind your head, combined with the shrieking growl with each downshift approaching a stop, the soundtrack played by the Murcielago is as good as it gets. The Murc looks exotic, it sounds exotic, it is exotic. With a sleek and sexy figure on par with any super car ever, and the performance specs to match, it is no great mystery why we have chosen the Lamborghini Murcielago as our number 4 supercar of all time.

3. Ferrari Enzo

Most car enthusiasts would agree that Ferrari has about as good an automobile heritage as one could have, so it only makes that the bronze medal in our rankings go to them. It would also seem fitting that their current flagship be the one to bring them this award.

Nothing bestows more confidence in a car then naming it after the godfather of your company. Despite the automatically impossible to beat expectations, the Enzo was still beyond imagination. The Enzo is the culmination of all things Ferrari has accomplished since its inception. A marriage of Formula one technology and Italian zest, the Enzo is truly a masterpiece.

Armed with styling lines that rival any car ever built the Enzo is futuristic, yes performance oriented. The lines on the Enzo are not just for show, although they do enhance the visual beauty of this machine. Powered by a 6.0 Liter V12, that produces one of the most pleasantly ear shattering howls and a blast to 100 mph in 6.6 seconds.

The Enzo is everything a Supercar should be, sexy and exotic, and fast as hell. The Enzo is one of the fastest, most expensive and advanced cars the world has ever seen. Few will ever get to see one, much less drive one, and those who do will be permanently changed. For this reason the Enzo is more than worthy of position on our list.

2. Bugatti Veyron SS

2. Bugatti Veyron SS

There is a camp of people out there who believe the defining characteristic of the Supercar is speed. Therefore, the fastest car of all time should be the greatest supercar ever built. It would be very difficult to argue against this group, the Veyron comes in on our list at number 2.

Statistically speaking the Veyron is the most prominent thoroughbread of speed ever produced. The original version produced a top speed just over 253 mph. But once the SSC Ultimate Aero achieved 256, and not in near the caliber of car as the Veyron, Bugatti pulled out the big guns and launched the Veyron Super Sport, which achieved a cerebellum splitting 268 mph.

This alone earns the Veyron a spot in the top 5. But if that isn’t enough, the Veyron is actually a great car in itself, aside from the performance. The build quality is spectacular, with a gorgeous interior, and ease of driving in regular conditions. The Veyron looks great, sounds better, and performs like no other machine ever.

There are few statistics or categories in which the Veyron can be topped, but that is the one area the Veyron falls short. Don’t get me wrong, the first time you experience acceleration in a Veyron, is something you will never forget, the thrill of this in and of itself is mind blowing.

Don’t get me wrong, this car is not just fast, it’s beyond anything else. This car is so fast, that some owners have a game called the 7 second game, where they try to brave the Veyron for 7 seconds under full throttle, delivering you well past safe speeds sooner rather than later.

But the fact remains, that there is a certain X factor found in the most special of cars. Something that cannot be defined in stats, figures or specifications. A certain sensation that can be explained, but only understood by those who have experienced it.  And this X factor, is more apparent in the car at #1 on our list.

1. McLaren F1

In a competition between so many incredible exotics, you would think it would be tough to pick a champion; but it wasn’t. That’s because in a competition including a car with a top speed of above 250mph (the Veyron Super Sport), a car that began the supercar movement (The Miura), and some of the fastest, rarest, and most insane sports cars ever produced, there is still a clear winner.

The F1 is the brainchild of famed auto designer Gordan Murray, and produced by the ever Meticulous Ron Dennis. The car featured a revolutionary 3 seat formation, space age body work, and an engine that is the barometer for perfection to this day.

The F1 is the best of the best, without a question. Simply put, it is the Michael Jordan of supercars, a man among boys. With a top speed of over 230 M.P.H., and  a shape that still looks fit for a space shuttle the F1 is still more car than anyone should be allowed to play with.

The F1 is the most complete, advanced, and iconic supercars the world has ever seen. For that it takes its place atop our list.
