Vanderhall’s Brawley GTS Is a 404-HP Electric Off-Roader
Vanderhall’s electric side-by-side packs quad motors and a base price that’s right around $50,000.
If you’ve encountered a Vanderhall in the wild, it was probably one of the company’s three-wheeled street vehicles, which sort of evoke a Polaris Slingshot that went to private school. The new Brawley GTS is something else entirely—four wheels, four electric motors, and an enclosed cabin with heat and air conditioning. It’s also technically a side-by-side, although the definitions on those are blurring, as exemplified by machines like the Polaris Xpedition that combine an enclosed cabin with side-by-side off-road capability.
The Brawley GTS has four motors that generate 404 horsepower and 488 pound-feet of torque, with a 40-kWh battery offering “up to” 140 miles of range. (We suspect that might be a tad optimistic based on the Brawley’s tall, angular shape and 35-inch all-terrain tires.) Claimed weight is only 2700 to 3000 pounds, so we’d imagine performance is quite lively. Off-road agility is aided by four-wheel steering that can angle the rear wheels in-phase or opposite the fronts at speeds of 15 mph or less. Ground clearance is a healthy 18 inches, and the four-wheel independent suspension delivers 21 inches of travel at each corner.
There are receiver hitches front and rear that can be used for towing (the tow rating is 1500 pounds) or as mounting points for accessories—skid plates, winches, snow plows. Communication ports at the receivers are wired to accessory switches in the cabin so you can control your electrified add-ons from the driver’s seat.
The four passengers each get their own heated bucket seat sporting plaid cloth inserts and four-point harnesses. The cabin is spare, with most secondary controls activated via a panel of toggle switches. But there is standard heat and air conditioning, as you’d expect on a machine that costs about $50,000. A four-speaker stereo is standard; an eight-inch subwoofer is optional.
Charging is via a CCS Combo port, which points to one of the contradictions of modern high-end side-by-sides like this one: They’re ostensibly not supposed to be driven on the street, but plenty of states now allow them to be registered for street use. And where else would you find a DC fast-charger? They don’t tend to be in your garage or out in the woods. The windshield also includes a wiper/washer system, which is often a required component of street legality. Just saying—the Brawley would look cool on a beach, but the same goes for the drive to the beach.
