Next-Gen BMW X5 Will Have 5 Powertrains, Including an Unusual One
The current-generation BMW X5 has been around for seven years now, and its next overhaul is just around the corner. We know the next iteration of BMW’s bestselling mid-size SUV will adopt the Neue Klass design philosophy that is starting to proliferate across the brand’s lineup. Now, we also know that the X5 will be offered with a wide array of powertrains. Along with diesel, electric, gas, and plug-in hybrid options, a hydrogen-powered iX5 model will also join the range.
While most of those options were previously available, battery-electric and hydrogen powertrains are firsts for the mainstream X5. The hydrogen option is particularly unique, as there are only a handful of production hydrogen-electric vehicles currently for sale in the United States.
BMW has experimented with hydrogen drive systems in the past, but the iX5 Hydrogen will be the brand’s first series-production hydrogen model, following the successful testing of a worldwide pilot fleet. The underlying technology is based on a third-generation fuel-cell system that BMW and Toyota have been jointly developing since 2014, with BMW producing components at its plants in Munich and Steyr, Germany. The brand says that the compact system will afford its future hydrogen models ample range and power while simultaneously reducing energy consumption.
Despite the slow adoption of hydrogen technology in the automotive sphere, BMW believes in its potential as the future of electric mobility and is backing up that stance with an initiative to expand the worldwide hydrogen refueling network. After launching a pilot phase for the HyMoS initiative in Germany and France, BMW intends to make hydrogen refueling more economically viable in other parts of the world by supporting existing hydrogen ecosystem projects.
While we expect the gas, diesel (not likely for the U.S. market), and plug-in hybrid versions of the X5 to debut in 2026 for the 2027 model year, the all-electric and hydrogen models aren’t scheduled to make an appearance until the 2028 model year.
